THE DFL PLAN TO RAID YOUR POCKET BOOK:

Start By Raising The Gas Tax Immediately – With Additional Increases Phased In During Summer Driving Season. “Raise the gas tax by 8½ cents a gallon by 2014. The increases would be phased in, going up 2 cents next month, another half cent on Aug. 1 and 3 cents on Oct. 1. After that, it would go up half a cent a year for six years. …. A passenger car owner who drives 12,000 miles a year and gets 22 miles per gallon would pay about $46 a year more in gas taxes.” (Bill Salisbury, “Legislature OKs Roads Plan,” Pioneer Press, February 22, 2008)

Let Metro Counties Raise The Sales Tax Without A Referendum And Add A New Excise Tax. “In addition, county boards in the seven-county metro area could impose a quarter-cent sales tax and a $20 excise tax on new vehicles. … No referendum would be required.” (Mike Kaszuba, Mark Brunswick, “Legislature Sends Gas-Tax Bill To Veto-Ready Governor,” Star Tribune, February 22, 2008)

New Minneapolis Sales Tax: 7.40% And New St. Paul Sales Tax: 7.25% “Increase the sales tax in the seven-county metro area by a quarter of a cent to pay for bus and rail transit. The measure would raise the sales tax 0.25 percent to 6.75 percent in suburban cities, 7.25 percent in St. Paul and 7.40 percent in Minneapolis.” (Bill Salisbury, “Legislature OKs Roads Plan,” Pioneer Press, February 22, 2008)

Add Additional Sales Tax To Cars Purchased In Metro Area. “The bill also adds a $20 sales tax to motor vehicles sold in the metro area.” (Bill Salisbury, “Legislature OKs Roads Plan,” Pioneer Press, February 22, 2008)

Increase License Tab Fees On All New Cars. “Boost license tab fees on newly purchased cars and trucks. If you keep your current vehicle, your fee would not go up. But if you buy a new car in Minnesota or a used car from another state, you would pay a fee of 1.25 percent of the purchase price. That would be $250 on a $20,000 car.” (Bill Salisbury, “Legislature OKs Roads Plan,” Pioneer Press, February 22, 2008)
